Aims and scope
BMC Medical Research Methodology is an open access journal publishing original peer-reviewed research articles in methodological approaches to healthcare research. Articles on the methodology of epidemiological research, clinical trials and meta-analysis/systematic review are particularly encouraged, as are empirical studies of the associations between choice of methodology and study outcomes. BMC Medical Research Methodology does not aim to publish articles describing scientific methods or techniques: these should be directed to the BMC journal covering the relevant biomedical subject area.
Our journal considers manuscripts that investigate how statistical techniques can impact study results along with manuscripts that propose new statistical methods that have an application in medical research. Submissions are also encouraged for articles assessing quality aspects of data collected in all types of medical research studies, including systematic reviews and meta-analyses, along with how the data are reported in published form. Furthermore, we accept research that investigates how choices of research methodology and study design can impact study results, including research participation and study outcomes.
For questionnaire validation studies, BMC Medical Research Methodology will only be able to consider submissions focusing on novel methodological aspects. Standard validation studies should be submitted to the journals covering the relevant biomedical subject area.
If your manuscript covers aspects of health services research, you may want to visit our sister journal BMC Health Services Research. Advances describing the development of laboratory methods should be submitted to the BMC journal covering the relevant biomedical subject area; additions to and optimization of established methods will be considered at BMC Research Notes.
BMC Medical Research Methodology does not make editorial decisions on the basis of the interest of a study or its likely impact. Studies must be scientifically valid; for research articles this includes a scientifically sound research question, the use of suitable methods and analysis, and following community-agreed standards relevant to the research field. Specific criteria for other article types can be found in the submission guidelines.
Fees and funding
Article-processing charges
Open access publishing is not without costs. BMC Medical Research Methodology therefore levies an article-processing charge of £1990.00/$2790.00/€2390.00 for each article accepted for publication, plus VAT or local taxes where applicable.
If the corresponding author's institution participates in our open access membership program, some or all of the publication cost may be covered (more details available on the membership page). We routinely waive charges for authors from low-income countries. For other countries, article-processing charge waivers or discounts are granted on a case-by-case basis to authors with insufficient funds. Authors can request a waiver or discount during the submission process. For further details, see our article-processing charge page.
