Author Guidelines
Thank you for considering the Annals of Global Health. Please use the following instructions as a guide.
Submissions that do not conform to the Journal's specifications for word limit and/or format may be sent back to the author for correction before peer review. Please ensure that manuscript files are submitted
Although there is a designated word limit for each type of submission to AGH authors may be asked to shorten their text. AGH editors prefer tightly written articles. There is no designated table or figure limit, but please include only the data and images that are necessary to illustrate the manuscript.
Submissions should be made electronically through this website. Please ensure that manuscript files are in Word or OpenOffice format.
Once submitted, the author can track the submission and communicate with the editors via the online journal management system.
We strongly suggest providing 2-3 Recommended Reviewers and you may do this in your Cover Letter or in the space provided during the submission process. This may help speed up the progress of your manuscript.
Data References
This journal encourages you to cite underlying or relevant datasets in your manuscript by citing them in your text and including a data reference in your Reference List. Data references should include the following elements: author name(s), dataset title, data repository, version (where available), year, and global persistent identifier. Add [dataset] immediately before the reference so we can properly identify it as a data reference. This identifier will not appear in your published article.
Example:
[dataset] [1] Oguro M, Imahiro S, Saito S, Nakashizuka T. Mortality data for Japanese oak wilt disease and surrounding forest compositions, Mendeley Data, v1; 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.17632/xwj98nb39r.1.
Original Research
Abstract
Structured abstract required. This should include the sections: background, objective(s), methods, findings and conclusions.
The maximum word count for structured abstracts is 300 words. Please make sure that your abstract concisely explains your manuscript.
Word limit
5000 words, including abstract, text, and acknowledgements, but NOT including tables, references, or the title page. Please limit the number of references to approximately 40.
Cover Letter
State type of manuscript, the title, and the authors. Confirm that the manuscript is original research that has not been published and is not under consideration elsewhere. Confirm that all of the authors participated in the preparation of the manuscript. Confirm that you have permission to reprint any figures or tables that were initially printed elsewhere.
Title Page
The title page is the first page of your manuscript text file. The title page should include: the title of the manuscript; a complete list of authors, their degrees, and their academic affiliations; full contact information for the corresponding author; funding source(s); conflict of interest statement for all authors; verification that all authors had access to the data and a role in writing the manuscript; article type; key words; and running head.
Conflict of Interest
In a separate document, state any potential conflicts of interest for each author or confirm that there are none. Each author should sign the document. Electronic signatures are acceptable.
Focus
These manuscripts present reports of original scientific investigations on topics in global health that have not previously been published and that are not being considered for publication elsewhere. Manuscripts may be edited to improve clarity and expression.
Photos/ Illustrations
300 dpi (or greater) tiff files are required for publication. If high resolution images are not available, your manuscript may be rejected for this reason. Do not use Word, Power Point or PDF format for photographs or illustrations.
Line Art Figures
Line art figures can be submitted in Microsoft Word or Power Point. Any type that is included in a figure must be at least 12 point but not more than 14 point. Similar figures should be formatted in the same fashion.
Tables/ Figures
No table or figure limit (within reason). The editors reserve the right to require deletion of tables or figures that are deemed unnecessary.
Ethics and Consent (if applicable)
Research involving human subjects, human material, or human data, must have been performed in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. Where applicable, studies must have been approved by an appropriate ethics committee and the authors should include a statement within the article text detailing this approval, including the name of the ethics committee and reference number of the approval. The identity of the research subject(s) should be anonymised whenever possible. For research involving human subjects, informed consent to participate in the study must be obtained from participants (or their legal guardian) and added to this statement. If a study involving human subjects/tissue/data was exempt from requiring ethical approval, a confirmation statement from the relevant body should be included within the submission.
Experiments using animals must follow national standards of care. For further information, click here.
Other
Manuscript titles should be 10-12 words or less.
Avoid overuse of acronyms in the text. Use only well-known acronyms (ie, HIV, STD, CT, MRI, DNA, etc.) Manuscripts with an overabundance of acronyms will be sent back to the author for correction.
Use style guide of the American Medical Association as a reference.
Double space all text.
Superscript all references in text.
Make sure all references are used in the text.
If English is not your native language, AGH editors strongly encourage you to have your text edited by a professional translator or native English speaker before submission. (This will most likely eliminate an extra revision step.)
