JOURNAL OF OPTIMIZATION THEORY AND APPLICATIONS
Online Submission
Before submitting a paper to JOTA, it is recommended that you follow the instructions in the next section (Editorial Procedure). If you do not do this, the editorial process will take much longer. The LaTex template discussed below will make it easier to follow the instructions.
Authors must submit their manuscripts online. Electronic submission substantially reduces the editorial processing and reviewing times and shortens overall publication times. Please follow the hyperlink “Submit Online” on the right and upload your manuscript following the instructions given on the screen.
An Associate Editor (AE) may be suggested, although the final selection of the AE will be made by the Editors. Also, please suggest several prospective reviewers, indicating title, full affiliation, and e-mail address.
It is preferred that manuscripts be submitted in LaTeX. A LaTeX template can be obtained by clicking on the link “JOTA LaTex files” below. Manuscripts must be submitted in pdf format. After a paper is accepted, a source file will be requested from the author.
The link "JOTA LaTeX files" downloads a folder named “LaTeX JOTA” that contains six files: Fig-1.pdf, spmpsci-unsrt.bst, svglov3.clo, svjour3.cis, template.pdf, and template.tex. The file template.tex is a LaTeX code for the Instructions for Authors specifically for JOTA. If you typeset template.tex, you will obtain template.pdf, the Instructions for Authors in the journal format. The file svjour3.cis (uses svglov3.clo) is the standard Springer document class. The file Fig-1.pdf is a sample figure. If you use BibTeX, the file spmpsci-unsrt.bst prints the references in the JOTA style in the order cited in the text. These items are further discussed in the file template.tex, which you can use to create a LaTeX file for your paper.

Text
Manuscripts must be double spaced, with the pages numbered. Figures and tables should be included in the text. The journal’s editors may request, before or after peer review, that a lengthy manuscript be shortened. Thus to prevent a possible publication delay, manuscripts should be of a length that will not exceed 18-20 journal pages.
The following rules will yield a manuscript of the appropriate length:
1) The manuscript text should be as concise as proper presentation of the ideas and methods will allow. An economically-written text also conserves the time of our peer reviewers.
The journal’s editors may request, before or after peer review, that a lengthy manuscript be shortened. Thus to prevent a possible publication delay, manuscripts should be of a length that will not exceed 18-20 printed journal pages.
This can be accomplished by following these instructions:
2) Manuscripts must be double-spaced, with at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) margins on all sides. Single-spaced manuscripts will be returned without review.
3) The pages should be numbered. Figures and tables should be included in the text.
4) The text should be in 12-point font and the manuscript should not exceed 30-36 pages, with the lower bound appropriate for papers with a large proportion of equations, figures and/or tables, which consume more space than text on the printed page. Survey and invited papers may have greater length, at the discretion of the editors. Technical papers and Forum papers should not exceed 12-14 pages.
Editorial Procedure
This journal publishes carefully selected papers covering mathematical optimization (and related topics) and its application to science and engineering. For a theoretical paper, the analytic treatment is compulsory. For an applications paper, the paper should be as much about the application of an optimization method as it is about the solution of a particular problem. Therefore, an applications paper should contain a formal statement of the optimization problem in which the optimization variables, the objective function, and the constraints are clearly identified. If the paper is numerical in nature, the application and the choice of the numerical method should be discussed. Papers that present the formulation of a very large complex optimization problem with little discussion of optimization will probably be returned to the author with a recommendation to publish it in a journal more specifically related to the problem. It would be better for an author to select the simplest problem that is contained in the complex problem and to present its solution.
