Author instructions

‘Herzogia’ is the international journal of the Bryological and Lichenogical Association for Central Europe (BLAM) and publishes original research papers and short communications in German and English. It focuses on the systematics, taxonomy, biogeography and ecology of bryophytes and lichens with a predominantly European distribution, or on species which are of general interest to members of BLAM. ‘Herzogia’ is published twice per annum (one volume with two issues).

Manuscripts should be sent to the senior editor: Dr. Frank Müller, Technische Universität Dresden, Institut für Botanik, 01062 Dresden, Germany. E-mail: frank.mueller@tu-dresden.de The length of articles should 5–15 pages, or for short communications 1–5 pages. For longer contributions, the editorial staff should be contacted in advance.

For manuscripts in English, the title and abstract should also be given in German. No more than 10 key words are to be given, with no words already in the title repeated. In the case of longer titles, a short running title is required. Manuscripts with more than one author should indicate a corresponding author.

Manuscripts must be written clearly and concisely, and should generally comprise the following sections: Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion. The manuscript should include appropriate illustrations and tables presenting relevant data including the results of statistical analyses where appropriate. Acknowledgements, references and the address of the author conclude the article.

The manuscripts are required on CD, or by e-mail as a text document in MS-Word or as an rtf file. Two title sizes are available in the text in addition to the heading. Special formatting orders and text designs (blank lines, move centre, underline, title numberings etc.) are not acceptable.

Bold type, small capitals and italics should be inserted, as well as other special characters (č, ě, ł, ø, ř, ş etc., preferably from the type set of Times New Roman). The approximate position of illustrations and tables can be marked in the manuscript.

References: Journal names are abbreviated according to Bridson, G. D. R. 2004. BPH-2 (Periodicals with botanical content, Pittsburgh), the older version B-P-H (Botanico-Periodico Huntianum, Pittsburgh 1968, Suppl. 1991) or the Internet version BPH Online (homepage: http://fmhibd.libraryNaNu.edu/fmi/iwp/cgi?-db=BPH-online&-loadframes); if these works are not available, references must at least be consistent. Write all English words with lower-case letters except for proper nouns. Begin each reference on a new line, without tabs or blank lines.

Author names are to be written in small capitals (not in capitals) in the references and the text.

For example:

Löfgren, O. & Tibell, L. 1979. Sphinctrina in Europe. – Lichenologist 11: 109 –137. [volume number in bold] Wirth, V. & Düll, R. 2000. Farbatlas Flechten und Moose. – Stuttgart: Ulmer.

Büdel, B. & Scheidegger, C. 1996. Thallus morphology and anatomy. – In: Nash III, T. H. (ed.). Lichen Biology. Pp. 37– 64. – Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.

References in the text should be presented in the form: Galloway (1985, 1991) or: (Philippi 1988, Frahm & Stapper 1999, Wirth et al. 2000: 234).

Latin terms (only genus and species names) in the title, text and references should be in italics.

Author names are written in normal types (not small capitals). Abbreviations of author names follow Brummitt & Powell 1992 (see also: http://www.uk.ipni.org/ipni/query-author.html).

For herbarium acronyms use Index Herbariorum (Holmgren et al. 1990. Regnum Vegetabile 120, Ed. 8, see also: http://sciweb.nybg.org/science2/IndexHerbariorum.asp).

MycoBank registration numbers should be included for all new names of lichenized and lichenicolous fungi proposed (see: http://www.mycobank.org/).

Specimen citation should be concise. If long specimen lists are required, these should be placed in an appendix, or as supplementary material to be published online.

Figures: Each figure should be provided as a separate file (not mounted to panels, not bound in the text) and in high quality (tif format with 600 dpi or more). Scales must be marked directly on the figures, taking care that an appropriate line width is used. The length of the scales is to be given in the legends only. Legends must be provided on separate pages. If several illustrations are to be combined into a single panel, please enclose an outline with inserted figure captions (indicating their location) in addition to the original files without any figure captions (but with scale bars). The final layout is uniformly prepared by the senior editor. Each original figure file should carry the name of the author of the manuscript, the figure number and the figure caption.

Tables can be prepared in ‘Excel’ or ‘Word’ in a separate file outside the main text.

The editorial staff shall decide on the acceptance of manuscripts on the basis of referee reports.

Proofs are sent directly to the corresponding author as an e-mail attachment, and must be corrected immediately and returned electronically to the senior editor. Upon publication, the corresponding author will receive a screen-resolution PDF file (Eprint) of the published version of their article by email which they should share with co-authors. Hardcopy offprints are no longer distributed.

With the acceptance and publication of manuscripts, the exclusive copyright for every language and country is transferred to the publishers. The copyright covers the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute the article including reprints, microfilm or any other reproductions and translations.
