INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS
The Jornal Brasileiro de Pneumologia (JBP, Brazilian Journal of Pulmonology) ISSN-1806-3756, published on a rolling basis, is the official organ of the Brazilian Thoracic Association for the publication of scientific papers on pulmonology and related areas. The JBP is indexed for PubMed (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/journals/2395) and for SciELO (http://www.scielo.br/jbpneu).
After an initial analysis, manuscripts will, at the discretion of the Editorial Board, be sent to qualified reviewers. Anonymity (of authors and reviewers) will be preserved throughout the review process, except when the article submitted has already been deposited on a preprint server, in which case the JBP employs a single-blind peer-review process (the authors being blinded to the identity of the reviewers). Articles that fail to present sufficient merit, have significant errors in methodology, or are not in accordance with the JBP editorial policy will be directly rejected by the Editorial Board, with no recourse.
All manuscripts must be submitted in English (American or British usage is acceptable but not a mixture of the two). It is essential that the text is written in good-quality English. If the authors are not fluent in the English language, it is recommended that the article be edited by a professional editing service before submission or evaluated by a native English-speaking colleague. Evaluation by a professional editing service is not a prerequisite for publication in the Journal, nor does it imply or guarantee that the article will be sent for review or accepted for publication. Any submission written in a language other than English will be returned to the authors. All articles accepted for publication will be made available in English and Portuguese on the Journal website (www.jornaldepneumologia.com.br). At submission, each article will be assigned a manuscript number for future reference.
*No fees are charged for article submission or processing, and eventual publication.
The JBP upholds the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) policies regarding the registration of clinical trials, recognizing the importance of these initiatives for the registration and international, open-access dissemination of information on clinical trials. Therefore, the JBP accepts only those clinical trials that have been registered with one of the clinical trial registries that meet the criteria established by the WHO and the ICMJE. Links to those registries are available on the ICMJE website. This registry identifier must be included at the end of the abstract.
Within this context, the JBP adheres to the definition of a clinical trial as described by the WHO, which can be summarized as "any research study that prospectively assigns human beings to one or more interventions to evaluate the effects of those interventions on health-related outcomes. Such interventions include the administration of drugs, cells, and other biological products, as well as surgical procedures, radiological techniques, the use of devices, behavioral therapy, changes in treatment processes, preventive care, etc."
In human studies, the Methods section should include a statement that the study was approved by the relevant local or national research ethics committee, preferably with the reference number, and was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. Experimental animal studies must comply with the pertinent ethical principles.
Manuscripts are accepted for consideration by the JBP with the understanding that they have not been published previously and are not being considered for publication elsewhere. The JBP uses Crossref Similarity Check software (iThenticate) to assess the degree of similarity between submitted manuscripts and previously published articles.
Preprints
The JBP accepts submissions of articles deposited on preprint servers. For these articles, the peer-review process will be single-blind. The corresponding author must complete an authorization form stating that the article submitted was previously deposited on a preprint server.
AUTHORSHIP
An individual may be listed as an author of an article submitted for publication only if they have made a significant intellectual contribution to its creation. The individual must have participated in at least one of the following phases: 1) design and planning of the study, as well as interpretation of findings; 2) writing and/or revision of all preliminary drafts and the final version; and 3) approval of the final version.
Mere data collection and cataloging do not constitute authorship. Likewise, authorship should not be conferred on technicians performing routine tasks, referring physicians, doctors who interpret routine exams, or department heads who are not directly involved in the research. The contributions made by such individuals may be acknowledged in a section at the end of the text (before the references). The contribution of each author to the study and any acknowledgments must be included in the title page (see Title Page).
The JBP allows up to 10 authors for original articles, although exceptions can be made for papers considered to be extremely complex. For papers with more than 10 authors, a letter should be sent to the JBP describing the participation of each. The accuracy of all concepts presented in the manuscript is the sole responsibility of the authors.
PRESENTATION AND SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS
Manuscripts must be submitted electronically via the ScholarOne submission system: https://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/jbpneu-scielo. The instructions and submission process are described below: The copyright transfer form must be electronically signed by each of the authors and uploaded to the ScholarOne. The form is available here.
Authors are requested to follow the JBP editorial guidelines carefully, especially regarding the maximum number of words, tables, charts, and figures allowed, as well as the preparation of references. Failure to comply with the instructions for authors will result in the manuscript being returned to the authors so that the pertinent corrections can be made before it is submitted to the reviewers.
Special instructions apply to the preparation of guidelines and consensus statements, and authors should consult these instructions on the JBP homepage before preparing such documents. Guidelines and consensus statements will be published on a rolling basis as special articles.
The JBP reserves the right to make stylistic, grammatical, and other changes on accepted manuscripts.
ARTICLE TYPE SPECIFICATIONS
Main text files should be submitted in Word (.doc or .docx). The table below shows a summary of specifications for the types of manuscripts that can be submitted to the JBP.
