Editorial Process
The editorial process at ATVB is designed to provide high quality reviews that are fair and balanced, and provided in a timely manner. The editorial team will provide an initial review for adherence to submission instruction and scientific quality. Manuscripts that are deemed of appropriate quality following this initial appraisal are subsequently submitted to a full review process. The editorial team coordinates a process of recruiting highly qualified reviewers, with 3 opinions being provided for the majority of submissions. The journal requests that critiques are provided in a format that imparts a clear understanding of the reviewers' opinions on the strengths and weaknesses of the manuscript. A team of editors provides input into the decision letter. Decisions will be communicated to all authors via e-mail. The mean times of providing decisions are posted on the ATVB web site.
The editors of ATVB will only respond to authors through the editorial office. All correspondence related to any aspect of the editorial process should be sent to atvb@atvb.org. All author correspondence will be reviewed in a timely manner by the editorial team.
Presubmission Inquiries
The editorial policy of ATVB is not to respond to pre-submission inquiries. The Editors of ATVB will not reply to emails from potential authors of Original Research inquiring if their manuscript or proposed manuscript topic is suitable for the journal. Authors should submit their manuscripts for formal peer review after following all of the guidelines listed in these Instructions to Authors.
Article Types

All manuscripts should conform to one of the below article types and authors should note the length restrictions and other eligibility criteria for each type of article. Word limits for each manuscript category include all sections of the manuscript unless otherwise noted. A brief description of each type follows:
Original Research Articles
Original Research: The main criteria for acceptance of original research articles are conceptual novelty, importance, and soundness of methodology. Usual length is approximately 7,500 words and aproximately 6 (can be multi-panel) figures. Manuscripts of greater length can be accepted, but will be subjected to additional costs.
Word Limit: 7,500 words (including references). Display limit: 6 Figures/Tables
Brief Reports: Brief Reports are intended to be more narrowly focused articles presenting rigorous original research.
Word Limit: 5,000 words (including references). Display limit: 2 Figures/Tables
Research Letter: Original research articles of a very focused and condensed nature will also be considered for publication in ATVB. Research Letters must not exceed 800 words and 5 references and can include only 1 figure (with no more than 6 panels) or table. No supplemental materials or abstract should be included. Research Letters will be peer reviewed in a manner identical to original research articles.
Word Limit: 800 words with no more than 5 references. Display limit: 1 Figure/Table (with no more than 6 panels) No Supplemental Data allowed
Rigor and Reproducibility Research Letter: These letters enable reporting of validation or concerns any form of reagent or material that would be used broadly in original research articles published in ATVB. Research Letters must not exceed 800 words and 5 references and can include only 1 figure (with no more than 6 panels) or table. No supplemental materials or abstract should be included. Research Letters will be peer reviewed in a manner identical to original research articles. Please Note: Supplemental Data is not allowed for this article type.

Review Articles
Brief Reviews: These are stand alone reviews on topics of interest to the readership. Length is approximately 5000 words. Schematic and/or summary figures and/or tables are encouraged. Uninvited Brief Reviews are also considered; during submission, the most senior author's CV should be attached as a Supplemental File.
ATVB in Focus Reviews: These are a series of thematically related reviews in areas identified by the editors. Each review will be written by an investigator who is an international authority on the topic area of the review. Length is approximately 5000 words. Schematic and/or summary figures and tables are encouraged.
Commentary/Opinion
Editorials: All editorials are commissioned by the editors. Text should be approximately 1,000 words. A schematic and/or summary figure or table is encouraged.
Letters to the Editor: Published online only. Letters are opinion pieces on work published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology and are reviewed by the editors to establish scientific decorum, overall level of interest to the readership, clarity, and appropriateness as contributions to the scientific literature. The authors should state clearly and succinctly their opinions, citing appropriate evidence to support them. Criticisms and disagreements must be articulated with respectful and professional language. Personal feelings, personal reactions, or personal issues are not appropriate content for Letters and will not be published. Replies are routinely solicited in advance from the authors of articles addressed. Letters to the Editor (and replies, which are also published as Letters) will appear online only. Letters to the Editor may not exceed 1,000 words in length. Figures and tables are not permitted. Citations should follow journal style. Please clearly note at the top of the Letter the ATVB article being referenced.
